Meet Bear! Woof! Let me introduce myself!  My name is Bear and I am the canine office manager at Avondale Veterinary Complex.  I supervise the daily activities from behind the front desk at the main clinic.  I came to be part of the Avondale family in 2007 after I was hit by a car. I was in bad shape and Dr. Woodruff and the rest of the staff worked very hard to save me.  I was very bruised; my back right leg was badly broken and after four hours of surgery, Dr. Woodruff wasn’t sure I would make it. My owners weren’t able to take care of me, so I became part of the Avondale family. I was sleeping at night in one of the exam rooms with several large doggy beds, blankets, a night light, food water and a few toys to keep me company. During the day I would hang out behind the front desk, which became the full-time position at Avondale that I hold today. (Some folks kid that I’m the guard dog, but even though I’m large and lean at 85 pounds, little dogs scare me. People think that’s funny, but when little dogs bark, it sounds like an alarm going off and I just want to get out of there!) Anyway, after four months my leg wasn’t healing well, even with all the special care I was getting. I had nerve damage from the beginning and it wasn’t getting any better. My fractured leg was worse than before. So, the leg was amputated and I’m now a large, furry tripod. Trust me, having four legs is over estimated. I’m doing just fine with three! I have a pretty good nature and I really enjoy my job here at Avondale. The staff is wonderful and they take turns taking me home for sleepovers. It’s like spending the night in a five star doggy hotel, only better because love is included.  The Avondale clients are so nice to me. They bring me toys and treats and lots of ear scratches and sweet words. Dr. Woodruff had to put me on doggy treat rations, because I was getting so many that I was gaining weight! So there you have my story. I’m a lucky dog to have so many people to take care of me! I learn a lot hanging around here and I’m going to use this blog to pass on some of that information to you. Tips and stories and maybe a joke sometimes. I hope to help you take care of your pet and maybe bring a wag to your tail now and then.  Woof!

BEAR'S ADVENTURES

Bear
Hi All,   I wanted to share a touching moment I witnessed last night while working at the front desk.  Last evening was busy as we had to say good bye to several cat clients.  One case in particular was an older cat with older human parents; they had their kitty for a lifetime, making it very difficult to come to terms with and make that decision. At that moment, the cat's human mom began crying, very audibly, in our front office. Bear immediately took notice, stood up on the swinging door to the front office area, opened with his front paws, went to her and sat by the cat mom's wheelchair; directly looking into her eyes he said "I am so sorry about your kitty, but you were a good mom. . ."  Then Bear put his head on the moms leg to further console.  We have a very special Bear among us; we should all learn to behave like Bear. Well, it is Fall in Iowa and the colors are all changing, the leaves falling and the temperatures are finally getting cooler!  Bear decided it was time to visit a pumpkin patch.  He had always wanted to go through a Corn Maze and see if he could find his way out!  After begging Janne' and Sarah to take him, they finally agreed.  What a beautiful day to be outside enjoying all nature had to offer. They even let Bear pick out a pumpkin!  He didn't get lost in the Corn Maze - thanks to Janne', who never let him get too far in front of her. He had a lot to tell the other Avondale employees about when he returned.  What a great day!
Bearís Construction Job
It was time for the Avondale Pet Resort to have a make over. After all, it had been 17 years!  Bear wasn't here when the Pet Resort was first built, so he decided he needed to have input in the remodel as well as provide his help.  He put on his construction hat for protection and grabbed his tool belt.  It took longer than he thought it would and he was really tired by the time the work was finished.  Bear decided he needed to be the main character in the mural that was painted to go on the side of the Sports Complex Suite, so if you look closely, you will see that Bear is the one serving others behind the counter!  He was extremely pleased with the way it came out and frequently walks back to "look at himself".  Bear thinks the Pet Resort Suite remodel came out very well.  There was even a contest to name the newest suite with the surf board, and the name chosen was Pacific Paradise.  Bear hopes everyone will stop out to see him and take a tour of the newly remodeled Pet Resort Suites.
Concrete Adventure

It was a hot, sunny day at Avondale.  Bear saw the concrete people working to replace some of the sidewalks and parking lot cement.  He immediately thought his paw prints should be in the cement as people would be walking through the front door!  Not knowing exactly how to make sure his paw prints would be placed in the cement, he went looking for help.  Angella, Lisa, and Sarah were only too willing to help Bear!  The concrete people even got into the act.  Putting two of his three feet into the wet cement required much help from everyone, but at last it was successful!

It is such a special day whenever it is Bear's birthday and this year was no different.  There were special treats for every dog that came into the office as well as a "human" treat for the owners.  Bear loves being the center of attention; and so he made the most of his special day from all the attention he received from the clients that came into the office with special gifts for him to the love he received from all the doctors and staff. Even Animal Lifeline came to visit him with a special present! At the end of the day Bear was pretty tired.  As he found his "comfy" place to rest, he had sweet dreams of all the fun he had on his birthday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEAR AND HAVE A GREAT 2012!!
